Doctor Bosworth Shares Her Mom’s Cancer Journey. Anyway You Can: A Beginner’s Guide to Ketones for Life by Annette Bosworth, M.D.
Anyway You Can was the book that Kerry and I read aloud a few years ago when we drove between Omaha and Connecticut. The style was engaging, the subject was very interesting – it definitely kept us awake, entertained and intellectually stimulated as we drove across the country. Anyway You Can is both a memoir and an educational guide to Keto. Dr. Bosworth, known as Dr. Bos, reinforces what Next Step Fitness encourages its clients to do: Accept and take responsibility for our own health. If we don’t take responsibility, no one else will.
Dr. Bos is an internal medicine physician from South Dakota. In 2007, her 63-year-old mother, called Grandma Rose in the book, was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia or CLL. As Dr. Bos describes, CLL, CLL grows silently in the body taking refuge in places that you can’t see or feel. CLL lives in bone marrow and lymph cells. As she describes it, “you must watch and study CLL over time, waiting for just the right opportunity to hit it at its weakest point.” When Grandma Rose was 64, she underwent a round of chemotherapy which so weakened her that Grandma Rose swore she’d never do chemo again. Yet, the chemo bought Grandma Rose more time. At age 67, Grandma Rose’s CLL numbers were bad again and she was persuaded to do another round of chemo and, again, Grandma Rose was given more time but swore – no more chemo.
But, by 2016, Grandma Rose was in trouble again. In April of 2016, Dr. Bos had listened to a Tim Ferriss podcast interview of Dom D’Agostino, Ph.D. about his research on cancer and ketosis. That podcast lit a fire in Dr. Bos. Convinced of the potential benefits of ketones, in May, Dr. Bos put herself on a ketogenic diet. In her case, it was trial and error because it took her a month to figure out how to produce ketones but she ultimately did get there. And, when the doctor told Grandma Rose it was time for another round of chemo, Dr. Bos and Grandma Rose bought six weeks of time to make a decision.
In those six weeks, Dr. Bos put Grandma Rose onto a keto diet. After six weeks, Grandma Rose’s CLL count decreased by 30% – she avoided that dreaded chemo. The book shares the ups and downs of Grandma Rose’s CLL/Keto journey until 2018, when the book was published.
In Anyway You Can, Dr.Bos walks through:
- What Ketones are
- Metabolic health
- Responding to common objections
- Walking through how to begin a Keto diet
- Insulin
- Intermittent fasting
- Autophagy (to eat thyself)
- High fat and heart attack
A few points that especially captured my interest:
In past years, Keto was a treatment of last resort for children who suffered from seizures. Autopsies of brains of seizure patients who had lived on keto for 60 years showed brains that were “pristine.”
Fruit is evil.
Her case study of an alcoholic, depressed client who had lost everything but whom Keto helped revive to his former self.
What is a Keto diet as set by Dr.Bos?
- 10 grams of carbohydrates per day;
- No more protein than your ideal body weight divided by 2.2
- All the fat you can eat. [As to what kind of fat to eat, Dr. Bos states: “you can fuss about monounsaturated, polyunsaturated or saturated fats. You are losing focus on the chemistry shift we want. Just focus on and eat fat.”
This book is a must read for anyone who is seeking how to change their life. But, don’t believe me about this book, here’s what Dr. Bos says about who should read Anyway You Can:
“If you’re looking for one of the most effective and efficient weight loss solutions, I’ve seen in my 20-year medical career, this book is for you.
“If you’re looking for a way to supercharge your mental stamina, this book is for you.
“If you’re looking for the best anti-inflammatory on the planet – 100 times more potent than ibuprophen and 10 times more powerful than any steroid I prescribe, this book is for you.
“If you worry about cancer and wonder why I instructed my 71-year-old -mother living with cancer to produce ketones, this book is for you.
“If you would like to know why I stopped prescribing Prozac as a first-line depression treatment and started teaching patients about ketones, this book is for you.
“If you want to learn about ketosis in plain English, this book is for you.”
